California native Sabrina Marion is an artist with an ambition; make art to release everyday tensions. Her acrylic paintings evoke a sense of tranquility, offering dreamy spaces which she invites viewers to escape into to let go of their burdens.
Sabrina first encountered this meditative power of art as an observer. After losing her California home to a devastating neighborhood fire in 2017, Sabrina turned to Instagram and, frequently viewing abstract paintings, found the art to be a joyful distraction and escape from the trauma in her mind. A year after the fire, and now in a temporary residence, Sabrina felt great anticipation for when she herself could approach the canvas to paint too, so she very quickly made a small studio space in her garage. Since then, Sabrina has emerged with bodies of abstract paintings that allow her to relinquish concerns for reality, both on and off the canvas.
For Sabrina, “all problems seem insignificant when looking up at the sky,” something Sabrina often did as an imaginative child who spent a great deal of time alone, observing the vastness and getting lost in it. Today, her cloud paintings depict dreamy, spacious, abstract skies that offer her the same sense of wonderment, inquisition, and tranquility through their abstractions. Her use of colors, patterns, and compositions form an escapism for the artist, one she hopes the viewer also encounters for themselves.
For Sabrina, being one who is drawn to people, and to nurturing them, has also meant absorbing their emotions. Content as a talented hairstylist, but not feeling it’s enough of a creative outlet, Sabrina found painting to quiet her mind and disengage from the constant chatter. She experiments in her painting, creating as often as she can.
Sabrina lives in California with her partner Joe and her beloved dog Roux. She works from her home studio and participates in exhibitions both locally and nationally. Her work can be viewed on Instagram @badneighborart and sabrinamarionart.com
Finding myself as an artist came from a place of tremendous loss, but has resulted in immense joy and purpose. After a devastating neighborhood fire and losing my California home in 2017, I needed an outlet and distraction, a way to deal with my overwhelming grief. I began searching for abstract art on Instagram and immediately felt a release of tension from looking at beautiful paintings. After relocating to a temporary residence, the moment I could I set up a small studio in my garage, picked up a paintbrush and have been painting ever since. During my daily searches for art as a way to escape, I found myself wondering how the intricate abstract paintings were created. That inquiry into the how still drives my work today.
I want to create art that brings peace. Many natural elements that I’m inspired by show up in my work; sky, water, fire, rock. My acrylic paintings on canvas explore the vastness and depth of space. As a highly imaginative child, I would often look up at the sky and get lost in the space there. My cloud paintings offer that same type of escape for me. Through my compositions, and use of patterns and colors, I aim to evoke a sense of weightlessness and vastness, to offer joy and a release of tension. I hope my paintings become a place of distraction and that one can get lost in them, use them to escape from their troubles, to wonder what happens there within the spaces in my paintings, and to leave the heaviness of their thoughts behind.
